Texture perception

In the spring of 2024, Louisa Muir-Little was selected to develop her graduation project in the TextielLab. Fascinated by the almost architectural structures of knits, she investigated the extent to which architectural shapes and textures can be recreated on the flat knitting machine. With product developer Damien Semerdjian, she was able to translate characteristics of her 3D paper and foam models into knitted samples.

Using the double cloth technique and a combination of elastane and transparent polyester monofilament, she produced sturdy structures. She deliberately chose only two contrasting colours – blue and orange – to maintain focus on the texture. The project earned Muir-Little her master’s degree at London’s Royal College of Art in September 2024. For her final exam, she presented the samples she had made as knitted towers next to the 3D paper models, demonstrating that Texture perception bridges the gap between knitting and architecture.
