Å bli varm i trøya
Madelon Verbeek graduated with a master’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo with Å bli varm i trøya. This translates as ‘getting warm in a sweater’, a Norwegian saying about feeling at home somewhere. Verbeek, who moved from Tilburg to Oslo, returned to her former hometown to develop the project. In the TextielLab, she and product developer Matilde Vandenbussche created an enormous textile ‘fresco’ on the circular knitting machine that preserved the painterly quality of the original image. Measuring over 8 metres long, the work reflects on what it means to have two places to call home, the dilemma of staying or leaving, and the art of putting down roots. It was shown at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo and won Verbeek two grants in Norway.
