Albers & Snow
Mia Kugelmann came to Tilburg to research her master’s thesis ‘Die Farbe Weiß? Beginn einer Enzyklopädie’. With the TextielLab’s Lotte van Dijk, she wove two fabrics that showcase the many different shades of white by playing with textile techniques and materials. The work titled Albers refers to the ideas of the famous artist couple Josef and Anni Albers and combines sleek outlines and bands of colour on the one hand with surprisingly playful layers on the other. To achieve this, four white wefts of linen, paper and viscose bast were used; the different shades fade as the layers increase.
Snow is a woven landscape that aims to capture the multifaceted appearance of snow. Six white wefts and one thin blue lurex thread create a tactile fabric that plays with loose structures, floats and varying thickness. The yarns used all produce a different effect: hairy mohair, soft merino wool, shiny lurex, metallic techno yarn and a glossy raffia-like viscose. A heat-sensitive filling yarn woven into the fabric created a puffy effect when it was steamed.
