Batu dan Banjir

Swiss Indonesian artist Miranda Devita Kistler graduated from the KABK in The Hague with Batu dan banjir (Stone and blood), a project in which photography plays a major role. For this crossover between photography and textiles, she worked with product developer Yani Chuang on the circular knitting machine. Together, they converted an old, water-damaged photo of Devita Kistler’s grandmother in Indonesia into a knitted tapestry. The photo has run and faded, and the image is covered with water stains. These details were carefully incorporated into the fabric using polyester monofilament and long floats.

Batu dan banjir explores erosion in both a literal and a figurative sense: in damaging the photo, the water also causes the memories to fade. The work was on display over the summer in the ‘Best of Graduates 2024’ exhibition at Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam. It was then shown in Amsterdam’s Melkweg until mid-October as part of ‘Arty Party: Photography Graduates 2024’.
