Hanging Around
For her graduation project at Shenkar College in Israel, Tel Aviv-based Zvia Green spent three days in the TextielLab creating three woven tapestries with product developer Judith Peskens. She was inspired by the colours and shapes she had seen while travelling. She translated these into a visual landscape that reflects on cultural exchange.
The first tapestry literally and figuratively shows history unfolding. The highly layered fabric, which is made of recycled PET bottles and paper yarn, was given a 3D effect with built-in ‘pockets’ that Green cut open after the fabric was taken off the loom. The second tapestry is a reference to the patterns and colours of traditional Portuguese tiles, which in turn were influenced by Moroccan traditions. The third tapestry focuses on the introduction of Japanese patterns to Europe. A shrinking yarn was used in this work to create a different kind of layering in the form of bulges.
