HOME & WAIT FOR IT
Rens Muis and Pieter Vos of 75B decided one day to find out what their graphic designs would look like as textiles. They have been regulars in the TextielLab ever since. In 2024, they exhibited a woven version of the coat of arms of Rotterdam they had previously developed as a poster. The exhibition in Rotterdam’s Kunsthal, called ‘Klootviolen’, also included two recent tapestries that take the duo’s work in a new direction. HOME and WAIT FOR IT depict two oversized phone screens that reflect both designers’ love-hate relationship with their phones.
HOME shows the home screen of an iPhone filled with familiar app icons. Although the designers are dependent on the apps, the scribbles express their dislike of them. The second tapestry shows a frozen loading screen with the words WAIT FOR IT – an artistic representation of the frustration we all feel when technology fails. With product developer Lotte van Dijk, Muis and Vos carried out numerous colour tests. The weaving programme was developed in CMYK and RGB, the colour modes used by printers, but multiple yarn combinations were tested. To achieve the richest colours, the double cloth technique with a satin weave was eventually chosen.
