Casting New Traditions
In 2023, Brian Anderson split his time between the TextielLab and the EKWC, a ceramics research centre outside Tilburg, for a crossover between textiles and ceramics. His aim is to make the entire ceramics process more sustainable by employing regional raw materials, expertise and facilities. Part of this involves replacing traditional plaster moulds with moulds made of locally and organically grown textiles. In 2023, he worked with the TextielLab’s product developers to develop knitted wool moulds, which he used to make thin-walled clay vases in the EKWC.
In 2024, Anderson, who is based in Chicago, returned to Tilburg for the next step. With product developer Yani Chuang, he knitted two new linen moulds on the flat knitting machine. These have a different shape and scale from the previous series. He took the finely knitted moulds to Arita, Japan to cast them in porcelain.
