Historic Encounters, Flower and Sea, Portrait
In April and May 2024, Sies + Höke in Düsseldorf hosted Claudia Wieser’s solo exhibition ‘The Auratic Object’. The exhibition featured several tapestries, three of which were developed in the TextielLab in 2024: Historic Encounters, Flower and Sea, and Portrait. They are hybrid collages composed of painting fragments, photographic found material, and organic and geometric shapes. Wieser, who initially created her designs as digital collages on a computer, experimented in the TextielLab with materials and techniques.
Using the photo collages and delicate line drawings as a starting point, she explored how the different areas of the woven fabric could be given a contrasting look and feel. She wanted to make some areas matt and sober, while others were lush and had a lot of floating yarns. She also wanted to create pronounced metallic areas. The final works are made of cotton, wool, silver thread, synthetic materials and mohair.
