Seadalen Kirke

Kari Dyrdal worked on several weaving projects in the TextielLab in 2024. For the new Saedalen Kirke, a church in Bergen, Norway, she designed two tapestries: the main altarpiece and a smaller tapestry for the sacristy.

For location-specific designs, Dyrdal likes to be inspired by the immediate surroundings. She takes photos of these surroundings and translates them into textile patterns. The tapestry for the altar, The Mountain, which is almost five metres high and six metres wide, is based on a photo of an old stone wall near the church. By repeating the design as a mirror image, the pattern assumes the shape of a cross. The smaller tapestry for the sacristy, Water of Life, is based on a stream that flows through the church garden.
