De Wolden regulars’ table

Lucas Mullié and Digna Kosse both studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven and co-founded Foodcurators, a design studio that brings together food and design. For Wiede Wold, a municipal initiative in Wolden, Drenthe, Mullié and Kosse were asked to reflect on the future of rural areas. They designed a regulars’ table as a meeting place where conversations about ‘naoberschap’ (neighbourliness) could be held. Anyone who pulled up a chair could share their views by scratching them into the table. The Foodcurators also made a tablecloth featuring statements, headlines and news items about naoberschap – a quality that is praised by politicians but also used as an argument to cut facilities in rural areas.

In the TextielLab, product developer Frank de Wind embroidered the printed and handwritten texts on the white cotton tablecloth with viscose rayon and polyester yarns. Due to the size of the cloth, the texts had to be cut into sections and then carefully aligned. The regulars’ table and tablecloth along with a series of specially etched glasses were featured in the Wiede Wold Design Walking Route in and around Echten until the end of June 2024.
