Las mesas danzantes / The dancing tables
In Córdoba, the Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía C3A is hosting ‘Las mesas danzantes’ (The dancing tables) until March 2025. This exhibition of work by Mercedes Azpilicueta explores the rise of spiritualism in Europe in the 19th century, the possibility of communicating with the dead and the role of women as mediators between worlds. Central to the work is the Spanish feminist and writer Amalia Domingo Soler, who found in spiritualism the freedom to push social boundaries and explore other worlds.
Part of the installation is a woven tapestry measuring 170 x 250 cm, which shows a collage of themes from Domingo Soler’s universe. In the development process, grainy black and white images were painstakingly converted into a background composed of various shades and transitions of yellow. To ensure the colours matched the original design as closely as possible, merino wool was used along with a small amount of GOTS-certified organic cotton and white viscose. Copper Elirex thread gives the black and white archive images extra sheen.
