Nature’s Visual Sound

Sandra Keja Planken first worked in the TextielLab in 2023 on the project Ode al mar. It was such a success that she returned in 2024 to weave a new tapestry. Like its predecessor, Nature’s visual sound explores the relationship between humans and nature. Out of respect for nature, Keja Planken always works with left-over materials and recycled or sustainable yarns. With the leftovers available in the TextielLab, she created a new organism, which hangs on the wall like a beating heart.

For this substantial piece, she experimented with organic shapes and coarse structures. She used large weaves and numerous loose floats in a mix of Wolkat yarns, deadstock yarns and recycled PET yarns. After the fabric was removed from the loom, she cut around the design to create a whimsical, irregular outline. To exhibit the work, Keja Planken developed her own concept called Salon H-ome. During Amsterdam Art Week, she invited the public into her home to share her work in an intimate setting. In the summer of 2024, the tapestry was also shown at Cocoon Collectables’ Summer Salon.
