Symbiosis of Things

French designer Valentin Avon graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven with Symbiosis of things. The project shows that symbiosis can be about much more than living organisms. Using a polyester warp and a copper and stainless-steel weft, he developed a hybrid material that combines the flexibility of textile with the structural properties of metal.

The extremely strong fabric, which he created with product developer Marjan van Oeffelt, can be used for furniture, objects and clothing. Two tapestries and two free-standing works demonstrate both the aesthetic and functional possibilities of the metal yarn. It has an appealing shine, catches the light in intriguing ways and enables the fabric to be self-supporting. Symbiosis of things was one of 20 finalists for the Dorothy Waxman Prize.
