Movement

In her drawings and installations, artist Marisa Rappard explores what it means to be human in a world dominated by technology, where contact is fleeting, and the flow of information never stops. The two woven tapestries Rappard developed in the TextielLab with Judith Peskens examine the transience of existence and the alienation this entails. These themes are depicted in figures who are not only in motion but who also evaporate or become fragmented.

For Movement VIII, a pencil drawing on paper was carefully translated into a fabric measuring 310 x 160 cm. This process was informed by extensive preliminary research into colours, materials and textures. The tapestry will be on display at the Sanaa gallery in Utrecht in early 2025. Movement VII is a collage of the woven samples that were made for the larger tapestry. The inclusion of the numbered colour tests and the repeated shapes produced by the industrial loom make the sense of alienation and fragmentation even more explicit.
