Horizon

Visual artist Nathalie Brans works primarily with photographs, paper and textiles, often in combination with each other. The sun, moon and cosmos are central themes in her work, with light as the connecting element. Horizon, a woven tapestry measuring 150 by 180 cm, is based on a pinhole photo. The origin of these grainy photos or ‘solargraphs’ is miniscule: the image is projected through a tiny hole in a box onto a light-sensitive surface.

Translating this image into a tapestry makes it majestic and universal once again. Brans’ aim was to recapture in a woven fabric the tactility and materiality that are lost in photography. The challenge in the production process was to turn a grainy, low-resolution photo into a richly detailed tapestry. Horizon is the final work in a three-part series. It was featured in the ‘Elements’ exhibition at Galerie PontArte in Maastricht and at the IKOB Museum in Eupen (Belgium).
