A series of five jacquard-woven tapestries were on display in the summer of 2024 in ‘HESTENS FORTÆLLINGER’ (A horse’s tale), a group exhibition at Rønnebæksholm art house in Næstved, Denmark. The designs are a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous unicorn tapestries titled ‘La chasse à la licorne’, which were made in the Netherlands around 1500. In her version, Olivia Rode Hvass replaced the unicorn in a luxuriant French landscape with a normal horse in more whimsical surroundings. Unlike the original, the horse also escapes from the hunter to live freely.

In the lab, a colour and material palette was created for the entire series, which consists of four tapestries woven on the 170-cm loom and one larger tapestry made on the 350-cm loom. Each design is composed of 12 colours: ten matte cotton yarns and two acrylic wefts. At the exhibition in Denmark, the tapestries were displayed in an installation that included faded sunflowers, straw and discarded rocking horses.
